Softball Drops MAC Opener

3/23/2002

Nichole Corrigan went 5-6 with three stolen bases on the day.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The Marshall University Softball team (7-13) dropped two Mid-American contests to Bowling Green State University today. After two hard fought contests, Marshall fell 6-3 in their MAC opener and 2-1 in the night cap.

?We give Bowling Green credit for coming up with the two game-winning hits today,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?The intensity level was competitive on both sides. We just made too many little mistakes that really cost us.?

In the first contest Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) led off the second inning with a solo home run, her second of the season, to put Marshall up 1-0. The Herd continued to swing the hot bat in the third as Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) singled and came around to score on an RBI single by Vanessa Clarkson (Moreno Valley, Calif.).

Bowling Green (7-9) came back to score a run in the bottom of the third on a pair of doubles and added two more in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Marshall tied the game at three on a sacrifice fly by Clarkson that scored Nikki Wilcox (Lake Forest, Calif.) in the top of the fifth.

The Falcons would come back to score three on a bases loaded triple by Candace Machain in the bottom of the inning. That hit would end up being the difference in the contest as the Herd fell 6-3.

Corrigan went three-for-four and Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) was two-for-four to lead the Herd at the plate.

Bowling Green jumped out to an early lead in the second contest, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. Marshall tied up the game in the fourth when De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.) scored after Carrie Dean (Paradise, Calif.) lined to center, but the Falcons turned a double play to prevent the big inning for the Herd.

Stellar defense by the Herd kept the Falcons from scoring in the sixth, but Bowling Green would take the win in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Falcons? Natalie Phillips lined a basehit to centerfield with two outs and a runner on third to give Bowling Green the victory.

Corrigan was two-for-three and Sarah Chamberlain went one-for-two for the Herd.

Marshall returns to BGSU field tomorrow at 1:00 pm to take on the Falcons in a single game.
