Softball Defeated by Bowling Green

3/24/2002

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The Marshall University Softball team (7-14) dropped a Mid-American Conference contest to East Division rival Bowling Green State University (10-9) today. The Herd led throughout most of the contest, but could not hold on for the victory as they fell 5-3.

?It was a tough weekend because we fought so hard and came up short,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?We have to bounce back and work hard, but we also need to remember to be patient and take it one weekend at a time.?

Marshall kicked off the scoring in the top of the second inning when Carrie Dean (Paradise, Calif.) doubled to the right field fence to score Vanessa Clarkson (Moreno Valley, Calif.). The Herd added to their run total in the third when Nikki Wilcox (Lake Forest, Calif.) tripled to lead off the inning and then scored on a wild pitch by Bowling Green?s McKenna Houle who had just taken the mound in relief for the Falcons. De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.) then drew a walk and scored when Clarkson doubled to the gap in right center. The Herd held a 3-0 lead after three innings.

The Falcons put a run on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a bloop double Libby Voshell that scored a runner from third. Bowling Green?s Marla Moore then tripled in the sixth to score two runs and tie the game at three. After a bunt single and a walk, Voshell again singled with runners in scoring position, putting the Falcons up 5-3. Marshall was not able to put any runs on the board in the seventh and fell by the final of 5-3.

Clarkson went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Wilcox was also one-for-two to lead the Herd at the plate. Marshall?s De?Shaun Drake received the loss in relief for the Herd.

The Herd will return to action next Friday, March 29th as they travel to Buffalo, NY to take on the Bulls of the University at Buffalo.
