Marshall Softball Completes Sweep of Buffalo
3/30/2002
Huntington, W.Va.- The Marshall University softball team (10-14, 3-3 MAC) defeated the University at Buffalo (1-12, 0-6 MAC), 7-2 today to complete a three game sweep of the Bulls. With the win, the Herd evened their Mid-American Conference record to 3-3 on the season.
?I am very proud of how the girls played this weekend,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?We still have a lot of MAC games ahead of us, so we really needed the sweep this weekend to get back on the right foot and we got the job done.?
Marshall came out fired up and looking for the sweep at Dot Hicks Field, but it wasn?t all easy for the Herd. Buffalo?s Breanne Nasti homered in the first inning to put the Bulls up 1-0.
The Herd wouldn?t let that one run stand for very long, as they struck for all seven of their runs in the top of the third inning. Nikki Wilcox (Lake Forest, Calif.) started the inning off with a single. Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) and Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) followed with singles of their own. Vanessa Clarkson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force Wilcox home. Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) singled to left field to score Corrigan, before Carrie Dean (Paradise, Calif.) singled to score Davenport. The Bulls then made a pitching change, but it seemed to have no effect on the Herd?s hot bats.
Kelli Hall (Huntington, W.Va.)continued the scoring when she was hit by a pitch, which forced Clarkson home. Another Huntington native, Karri Britt, followed Hall with a single that plated Dean. Wilcox then smacked a double to deep right field for her second hit of the inning, which scored Hall and Britt for the Herd?s final runs.
The score would remain the same until Buffalo strung together a pair of hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate a one run, making the final 7-2.
Wilcox led the Herd at the plate, going three-for-three with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Corrigan, Davenport and Dean had multiple hits in the game. Marshall totaled 11 hits on the day and was perfect in the field. De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.) went five innings on the mound for the Herd, giving up only five hits and striking out two batters.
Marshall will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia on Tuesday, April 4th at 2:00 p.m.
