Men's Basketball Adds Five

8/27/2002

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University?s men?s basketball program welcomed five new players into the fold as player?s reported to classes Monday.

Junior college forward Marvin Black joined freshmen forwards LaVar Carter, Renardo Dixon, Mark Patton and guard Chad McComas at the team?s first meeting. These five players constitute the Thundering Herd?s incoming class and will be eligible to compete this season.

In a related note, coach Greg White announced that senior guard Richard Wilson will not be returning to the team.

Below are briefs on each of Marshall?s five first-year players:

Marvin Black: Black, a six-foot-seven, 215-pound forward, averaged 14 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, while shooting better than 65% from the floor for a Coffeyville squad that posted a 36-2 overall record and narrowly lost to Dixie State College (82-81) in the National Junior College Championship game.

Lavar Carter: Carter, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound center/forward, was named third-team All-State in Kentucky last season after helping Louisville?s Male High School to a Kentucky State Tournament Final Four appearance.

Renardo Dixon: Dixon, a 6-foot-9, 200-pound center/forward, averaged around 16 points and eight rebounds per game for Hargrave Military Academy. ?Renardo is a big time athlete who runs the floor extremely well,? Hargrave Head Coach Mike Preston said. ?He is one of the most underrated post players in the country. I had six guys sign early and Renardo has the most potential of all of them.?

Mark Patton: Patton, a 6-foot-9, 205-pound center/forward, was Marshall?s first signee of the early signing period. He was named West Virginia?s Class AAA Player of the Year after leading Cabell-Midland High to the state title.

Chad McComas: McComas, a standout guard on Cabell-Midland?s state title squad from a year ago, is joining the team as a non-scholarship player.
