Marshall Triumphs Over Southern Miss in Overtime, 2-1

9/1/2002

Ellerie Karl netted a goal in overtime to propel the Herd past Southern Miss.

OXFORD, Miss. ? Marshall?s Ellerie Karl netted a goal in the 102nd minute to lead the Thundering Herd to the 2-1 overtime win over Southern Miss, Sunday, in the Ole Miss Soccer Invitational.

?It was thrilling to be given the opportunity to score the game-winning goal,? Karl said. ?The entire team played really well. We never gave up and it paid off.?

The Lady Eagles (0-2) got on the board first as Katie Adams converted a pass from Emily Anne Chenoweth in the 16th minute of play.

Marshall (1-1) answered immediately, tallying its first goal in the 18th minute as freshman Ashley Schillig (New Albany, Ohio) scored on an assist from Kelly Kennedy (Ft. Wright, Ky.). The game remained scoreless the entire second half and ended dramatically when Karl scored on a header in the first overtime period. Freshman Jaime Gruber (Hudson, Ohio) earned the assist on the game winner.

Due to a violation the Herd was forced to play the majority of the second half and the overtime period with only ten players and still managed to pull out the victory.

?I am very proud of our team,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?To play almost an hour a man down says a lot about the team?s character and depth. We relied heavily on our bench and they came through.?

Marshall goalkeeper Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, NY) finished the match with four saves. Southern Miss out-shot the Herd, 15-9.

Marshall returns to action on Saturday, as they travel to face UNC-Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C. The match is set for 7 p.m.
