Women's Soccer Match Ends In a Deadlock With Akron

HUNTINGTON, W. Va.--The Marshall women?s soccer team opened its Mid-American Conference schedule Friday night on the road against the University of Akron. The two teams battled through two overtimes to a 1-1 tie.
?Akron is a much improved team,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?We have to shift our attention to Xavier now. We are creating a lot of opportunities, but we must learn to finish them. I am confident we will reach that next step soon.?
Marshall?s Sarah Gupton (Richmond, IN) scored in the 51st minute of the match to put the Herd ahead, 1-0. The Zips (3-1-1) came back with a goal of their own in the 76th minute to tie the score at 1-1. Despite repeated attacks at the goal Marshall wasn?t able to find the back of the net and after 120 minutes of play the game ended with the score 1-1.
The Herd (2-1-1) outshot Akron 11-10 in the match. MU also accumulated seven corner kicks.
The Herd returns to action at noon on Sunday at Sam Hood Field to take on the Musketeers of Xavier University. That contest will be followed by the Marshall men?s match as they take on Robert Morris University at 2:30. Admission to both contests is free.
