9/23/2002

Williamsburg, Va.-Marshall University women?s tennis player Jessica Johnson led a strong showing for the Thundering Herd by placing fourth at the William & Mary Invitational this weekend. Overall, Marshall tennis players combined to win 19 of their 33 matches.

?I was really pleased with our effort this weekend,? head coach John Mercer said. ?We were able to compete with some of the best players around the country.?

Johnson, currently ranked 82nd in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, led the way for the Thundering Herd; defeating two higher ranked opponents on her way to a fourth place finish in the highest singles flight.

In her opening round match, she defeated 32nd ranked Delila Causevic of Maryland (6-7, 6-4, 6-1) to advance to the second round. Johnson upset 41st ranked Mari Toro of Miami-Florida (2-6, 6-2, 7-6) in order to advance to the semifinals.

11th ranked Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion ended Johnson?s string of upsets, however, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Johnson then lost to 61st ranked Candice Fuchs of William & Mary to finish fourth.

The doubles tandem of Johnson and Alice Sukner also had a strong showing in the top flight of the doubles bracket. Johnson and Sukner paired together to place fifth. In the opening round, the pair defeated Miami-Florida (8-5) before falling to the University of Illinois (8-3) in the second round. However, the pair rebounded with wins over Wake Forest (8-6) and Virginia Tech (8-5) to secure a fifth place finish.

Marshall tennis players will now move on to the Cissie Leary Tournament at the University of Pennsylvania next weekend.
