Women's Soccer Pulls Out Win Against UNC-G
9/7/2002
GREENSBORO, N.C.-The Marshall Women?s Soccer Team pulled out its second win in a row against UNC Greensboro thanks to a Lindsey Jayjack (Dublin, OH) penalty kick midway through the second-half to earn the Herd a 2-1 victory over the Spartans in non-conference women?s soccer action from UNC-G Soccer Stadium Saturday night.
The Herd (2-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Danielle Lowther gained possession of a loose ball in the Spartans? defending third and calmly slotted it past the sprawling UNCG goalie. The goal was the first that UNC-G has allowed all season, ending a 205:57 scoreless streak.
Marshall continued to apply relentless pressure on the UNCG net, but Rudy was equal to each task. The UNCG goalkeeper made a number of key saves in the opening period to keep the Spartans in the match.
After the Marshall goal, UNCG (2-1) seemed to pick up its pace of play as well. The Spartans started to find some holes in the Herd defense, but Marshall goalkeeper Sarah Barber (Cincinnati, OH) continually turned UNC-G away. The Spartans did manage equalize at the 23:55 mark. Jill Barrett broke free from the Herd defense and spotted Cara Hammond. Hammond received, beat a defender and slotted the ball back across the goalmouth to a wide-open Amy Carnell. Carnell buried it past Barber for her team leading third goal.
With the match tied, 1-1, the respective goalkeepers, Barber for Marshall and the duo of Rudy and Jennifer Stillman, stole the show. The Herd nearly grabbed the lead on two occasions, but both shots from Ashley Schillig (New Albany, OH) ricocheted of the cross bar.
Schillig, who created havoc on the UNCG defense all night, earned a penalty kick in the 67th minute. Jayjack promptly buried it into the left corner to give Marshall a 2-1 lead.
UNCG kept the pressure on, but was unable to net an equalizer. Barber, who recorded five saves, made her biggest stop of the night with just five minutes remaining. Barber got just enough on a Rakel Logadottir blast to deflect the ball just wide of the goal.
UNCG goalkeeperRudy registered six saves in the opening half, while Stillman made three more stops in the second-half.
The Herd returns to action Friday, September 13, as they take on the Zips in Akron, OH at 7:30 p.m.
