MUNCIE, Ind. - Cameron Echols and Chris Williams combined to score 54 points and Ball State dominated the boards, 48-29, to post a decisive 96-73 victory over Marshall in Mid-American Conference men?s basketball action Tuesday.
The Cardinals (8-10 overall, 3-5 MAC) dominated the Thundering Herd in nearly every aspect of the game from the opening tip. BSU ran out to a 44-32 lead at the conclusion of the first half and cruised in the second half en route to the 21-point win.
Ball State out-rebounded Marshall (9-7 overall, 5-3 MAC), 27-15 and out-shot the Herd 47% to 31% in the first half. For the game, BSU owned a 48-29 advantage on the glass. The Cardinals also out-shot Marshall .486% to .396%.
The Thundering Herd struggled from the field, connecting on only 21 of 53 shots and only two of 13 three point attempts. The Cardinals limited MU standout Ronald Blackshear to only 12 points on 3-of-13 shooting.
Marshall?s leading scorer was Marvin Black who, despite early foul trouble, managed a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Williams led a host of Cardinals in double-figures. In addition to his 2 points, Echols scored 25, Rob Owens scored 17, and Matt McCollum added 20. Echols also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, while BSU?s Kevin Cates joined him in double-figures with 13 boards of his own.
Marshall will attempt to rebound from the loss when it hosts rival Ohio University Saturday at the Cam Henderson Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised by the Thundering Herd/ISP Sports Network (WSAZ-TV in Huntington/Charleston).
