Jen Short knocked in her first goal of the year.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Emily Russell had a hat trick for the University at Buffalo as they took down the Herd 3-1 Friday night at Sam Hood Field in Mid-American Conference action.

Russell scored the first three goals of the game, two coming within five minutes of each other in the second half.

Sophomore Jen Short (Mentor, Ohio) knocked in her first goal of the season and the first for Marshall at Sam Hood Field this year.

"I am happy we got a goal," head coach Chris Kane said. "It is just unfortunate it wasn't a tying goal."

Marshall stepped up its play in the second half, matching Buffalo in shots during the period 7-7.

"We did a better job in the second half," Kane said. "We need to put together a complete game though."

The Bulls out-shot the Herd 15-12 on the night.

Anna-Lesa Calvert got the win in the goal for Buffalo with two saves while red-shirt freshman Kai Nordness (Burnsville, Minn.) managed seven saves in the loss.

Marshall's record sits at 1-9-1 (1-5-0 MAC). Buffalo moves to 6-5-1 (2-3-1 MAC) on the season.

"We are going through tough times," Kane said. "But it's going to get better."

Marshall will travel to Bloomington, Ind. on Sunday for a non-conference matchup with Indiana University.

The game with the Hoosiers kicks off at 2 p.m.
