Tennis Turns in Solid Performance at Kentucky Fall Classic while Johnson Shines at All-American Tournament

LEXINGTON, Ky.- The Marshall University women?s tennis team turned in a solid performance at the 2003 Kentucky Fall Classic this past weekend. While Marshall was competing in Lexington, senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly,Pa.) was shining at the 2003 ITA Women?s All-American Championships hosted by UCLA, Los Angeles, Calif.
In the first round of tournament, Johnson defeated Katia Jakowlew (Arizona) in two straight sets 6-4 and 6-3 to advance to the second round. In the second round, Johnson once again prevailed with a three match win over Annie Meenes of Vanderbilt (5-7,6-4,6-4).
The second win advanced Johnson to the qualifying round of the tournament to face Jeminia Hayward (Boise State). Hayward managed to slip past Johnson with a three set victory (1-6,6-1,6-4) and qualify for the tournament. Despite the loss, Johnson, the third seed overall in the tournament, also qualified for the ITA Women?s All-American Championship.
The first Intercollegiate Tennis Association national and singles and doubles championships of the 2003-04 season - the Riviera/ITA Women?s All-American Championships takes place Oct. 9-12 at the Riviera Tennis Club.
At the 2003 Kentucky Fall Classic, Marshall placed five players in the designated singles consolation final matches.
In the blue flight singles bracket junior Lille Nzudie (Cameroon) won the consolation finals west with a defeat over Amy Wei (William & Mary) 6-4,6-4. Nzudie won three out of her four singles matches in the tournament with key victories over Purdue, Kentucky, and William & Mary.
Also in green flight singles action, senior Megan Skalsky (East Lansing, Mich.) was victorious over Emily Bombersback (Purdue) in three sets (6-1,3-6,6-0) to claim the finals north west consolation match. In white flight singles competition junior Joelle Good (Switzerland) defeated her teammate Danielle Hoch (7-5,7-6) to win the final south consolation.
Marshall will be off for the next two weeks, but will return to action Oct. 25 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the East Regional Indoor. The East Regional will mark Marshall?s last event of the 2003 fall campaign.
