Swimming and Diving Tops West Virginia Wesleyan and Baldwin-Wallace

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's swimming and diving team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan (158-65) and Baldwin Wallace (163-79) in a tri-meet at Marshall's Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium Saturday.

"We were very spirited swimming today and I am real encouraged by our performance," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "The girls were really into the meet and we had some great swims. We are definitely heading in the right direction."

The Thundering Herd women dominated the competition, winning 12 of the 13 events and posting several individual-best scores.

One of the top highlights from the day was the perfornance of Marshall diver Casey Mullholland (So., Stone Mountain, Ga.). Mullholand won the 1-meter with a score of 245.02 and 3-meter with an NCAA Diving Zones qualifying score of 274.20.

"This is the second consecutive year that Casey has qualified for the diving zones and I could not be more proud of her," Kraus said.

The NCAA Diving Zones are set for March 12-14 at a yet to be determined site, and are used as the NCAA Championships qualifier.

Marshall's women's 400-yard medley relay team of Milla Kuurto (So., Lohja, Finland), Erika Nilsson (Jr., Haninge, Sweeden), Kim Becker (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.), and Michele Knicely (So., Bridgeport, W.Va.) posted a time of 4:01.05 to open the meet. Nilsson also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.00) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.31), Kuurto finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (56.50), and Becker placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.30).

The Herd's Cara Davison (Fr., Chesterton, Ind.), Liisa Raty (So., Espoo, Finland), and Emily Edmonson (Fr., Chattanooga, Tenn.) won the 50-yard freestyle (25.20), the 200-yard IM (2:16.25), and the 100-yard freestyle (54.56), respectively. Raty also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.98 and participated on the 400-yard freestyle relay team, along with Cara Davison, Emily Edmonson, and Emily Moe (So., Rockford, Mich.) that placed first (3:45.42).

Marshall will next compete in the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, December 6-8.
