HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's swimming and diving team was upended by Mid-American Conference opponent Akron, 179-121, today at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
Sophomore Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) led Herd swimmers by finishing first in three events: the 100-yard butterfly (56.04) and the 200-yard IM (2:08.36, new MU and pool record). Kuurto's third win came with the record setting 400-yard medley relay team (3:59.10), comprised of Erika Nilsson (Haninge, Sweden), Emily Moe (Rockford, Mich.) and Emily Edmonson (Chattanooga, Tenn.). Nilsson and Moe also contributed first place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.82) and the 50-yard breaststroke (31.45), respectively.
"Our touchouts woes continue," said Marshall University Head Coach Leonard Kraus, "we probably lost five races due to touchouts. The girls swam well, but we are going to have to work on those touchouts this week."
Marshall's Casey Mulholland (Stone Mountain, Ga.) placed first in 1-meter diving (241.27).
For the Zips, Brenda Norris led the way with first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (24.63), the 25-yard freestyle (11.98) and the 50-yard butterfly (27.30).
The Thundering Herd will be back in action on Saturday, November 15 when they travel to Radford for a tri-meet with the Highlanders and Gardner-Webb. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
