12/20/2003
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Minutemen dropped the Marshall men's basketball team, 83-65, in non conference play Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. UMass improves to 3-4, while the Thundering Herd fall to 3-4.
Marshall never led in the game, and only had one player score in double-figures in David Anderson (Levittown, Puerto Rico), who tallied 11 points. Most of the statistical categores were close - the Minutemen shot 45.6% (31-68) compared to the Herd's 45.3% (24-53) clip from the floor. Marshall outshot UMass from three-point land, 44.4% (4-9) to 25% (4-16), and outrebounded the homestanding team, 36-35. However, the story of the night was turnovers, a negative statistic that has plagued the Thundering Herd in their losses this season. The Herd clawed back in the game in the early going, but never got closer than three points at 16-13 with 11:36 remaining in the first half. UMass took advantage of seven MU turnovers in 15 possessions, and expanded their lead to 16 at the half, 46-29.
In the second half, Marshall would get no closer than 14 points.
UMass was led by Rashaun Freeman, who had a double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. Maurice Maxwell led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, while point guard Anthony Anderson chipped in 17 points in the win.
