Men's Basketball Takes on Oregon Saturday

12/5/2003

The Marshall men's basketball team travels to the West Coast to take on the Oregon Ducks at The Rose Garden in Portland in the Ducks' annual Pape Jam Saturday.

Tip-off is scheduled 9:00 p.m.(EST) and the game will be available on ESPN Full Court pay-per-view and on ESPN Plus in the state of Oregon. The satellite coordinates for the broadcast are Galaxy 11, Transponder 14 (ku band).

The Oregon Ducks enter the contest with a 2-0 record after defeating Portland State on December 2nd, 62-55, at McArthur Court.

The Ducks, last year's PAC-10 champions, have participated in two consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2001-02. They are led by All-America candidate Luke Jackson, who averages 21.0 points and eight rebounds per game.

Last season at the Pape Jam, the game attracted 20,762 fans - the highest attended college basketball event in the state's history - as Oregon knocked off Kansas, 84-78.

The Herd, currently 2-2 after Thursday night's 79-77 win at Radford, has never faced Oregon, but is 2-0 all-time against teams from the PAC Ten. Marshall defeated California, 51-47 in the 1939-40 season, and beat Arizona State, 98-73, in the 1956-57 campaign. In the 97-year history of the basketball program, the Herd is 58-45 all-time against teams west of the Mississippi River.

The Thundering Herd is led by Ronny Dawn (Fort Thomas, Ky.), who averages 15.3 points per game. Marvin Black (Cleveland, Ohio) is next at 13.5 points per contest.
