Men's Basketball Falls to Oregon, 90-61
12/6/2003
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Oregon Ducks (3-0) capitalized on a weary Marshall team (2-3) and 27 Herd turnovers to take down MU, 90-61, in the fifth annual Pape Jam Saturday evening at The Rose Garden Arena in Portland. The game was Marshall's fourth in eight days.
Marshall competed early, but the Ducks' pressure defense and up tempo style of play wore down the Herd's legs and allowed Oregon to pull away with an easy victory. Ronny Dawn (Fort Thomas, Ky.), Marshall's leading scorer entering the game, knocked down his only three pointer of the contest to tie the game at eight with 18:01 to in the first half. A 14-2 run over the next four minutes gave Oregon a lead they would never relinquish.
The lone bright spot for the Herd was A.W. Hamilton (Georgetown, Ky.), who scored a career high 17 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Senior forward Marvin Black (Cleveland, Ohio) also added ten points.
All-American candidate Luke Jackson led five players in double-figures with 22 points. James Davis (16), Ian Crosswhite (14), Andre Joseph (14), and Brandon Lincoln (10) were the other players scoring ten points or more.
The Thundering Herd men open Mid-American Conference play December 13th against Northern Illinois in the Henderson Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
