- MU vs. IU
LAS CRUCES, NM- The Marshall University Thundering Herd Softball Team defeated the University of Indiana 2-0 Saturday in the New Mexico State Softball Tournament. Karri Britt (Huntington, WV) came through with a two out hit in the seventh to break a 0-0 deadlock and lead the Herd to victory.
?It was a tight game and I was excited to be able to come in in a clutch situation and get it done,? Britt said.
Marshall?s starting pitcher Randi Nielson (Tucson, AZ) had total command of the game in the Herd?s win over the Hoosiers (2-1). The sophomore hurler gave up only three hits in seven innings, including striking out the side in the fifth and pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth.
?I was pleased at how we executed at the end,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?Randi pitched a great game and our team showed heart and came through when it counted.?
The contest remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when the Herd struck for two runs. Allison Webb (Wayne, WV) led off the inning by reaching base on an error, but was cut down at second on a fielder?s choice. Missy Workman (Huntington, WV) came into pinch run and moved to second when MU?s Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, AZ) drew a two out walk. The Herd came right back after a great catch by the Hoosier right fielder as head coach Shonda Stanton put Huntington?s Britt at the plate with two outs and a runner in scoring position. Britt came through with a single to center that scored Workman and moved Kacenga to third. After re-entering the contest Jessica Williams (Acworth, GA) and Kacenga executed a perfect delayed double steal to add the insurance run for the Herd. Marshall held Indiana in the bottom of the seventh and took the 2-0 victory.
The Herd improves its record to 2-1 on the young season and will continue action in the New Mexico State University Tournament on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. as they take on San Jose State University in Las Cruces, NM.
