LAS CRUCES, NM- The Marshall University Softball Team pulled out a 3-2 victory over Eastern Illinois University Sunday morning in their final contest of the New Mexico State Tournament.
The Herd got things started in the top of the third inning when the one, two and three combo of Jessica Williams (Acworth, GA), Sierra Davenport (Tucson, AZ) and Amanda Williams (Acworth, AZ) combined to plate three runs. J. Williams started off the inning lining a base hit to left field. Davenport then moved her to second on a perfectly bunt for a base hit. The pair then executed a double steal to move into position for A. Williams to knock them both in with a base hit to center.
The Panthers (0-5) tied things up with two runs of their own off a pair of base hits and a Herd error in the bottom of the third inning.
The contest remained tied until the top of the seventh inning when Amanda Williams walked, stole second and came around to score on an EIU error. Eastern Illinois loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but the Herd defense held and MU pulled out a 3-2 victory.
Randi Nielson (Tucson, AZ) received her third win of the season on the mound, giving up only two hits in the contest. Amanda Williams scored two runs to lead the Herd at the plate.
Marshall, now 3-2, will continue the 2003 season next weekend as they travel to Atlanta, Georgia to compete in the Georgia State University Spring Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
