UTC Mocs Slide Past the Herd, 3-1
2/28/2003
CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Marshall University softball team fell to the Lady Mocs of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Friday, 3-1. The Herd falls to 6-4 overall on the season.
MU?s starting pitcher De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, CA) pitched out of a one out bases loaded jam in the first to hold the Mocassins. Karri Britt (Huntington, WV) and Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, AZ) singled to get the Herd going in the bottom of the second. Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, NV) then walked to load the bases, but the Herd could not push a run across the plate.
The Mocs knocked three doubles in the top of the third, but good defensive play by the Herd allowed only one run to cross the plate. MU catcher Allison Webb (Wayne, WV) held on to a great relay throw after a collision to tag out the UTC runner at the plate and leaving the window open for Marshall?s counter.
After a couple of long Marshall outs, Webb got things started with a two-out single. Freshman third baseman Leigh Wintter (Acworth, GA) laced a double down the left field line to score Webb from first and tie the score at one after three complete innings.
In the top of the fifth an MU error combined with one UTC hit helped the Herd fall behind 2-1. Marshall continued to hit the ball hard, but couldn?t string any hits together. UTC added an insurance run in the form of a Melissa Ramirez home run, making the final score 3-1.
Britt went 2-for-3 to lead Marshall at the plate. Webb and Sierra Davenport (Tucson, AZ) were 1-for-3 in the contest. Sophomore hurler Randi Nielson (Tucson, AZ) received the loss on the mound, coming in a relief role. Nielson falls to 4-2 on the season, giving up four hits and striking out two batters. Drake gave up five hits and struck out four in the no decision.
Marshall will return to action in the UTC Frost Classic at 10:00 a.m. as they take on Tennessee State University.
