HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? Freshman swimmer Milla Kuurto was named the Mid-American Conference?s women?s co-swimmer of the week on Tuesday for her excellent efforts in the pool on Saturday at the University of Toledo. Ohio?s Shannon Kelly, a junior, split the honors with Kuurto.
Kuurto set a Student Recreation Center Pool record at Toledo in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.55, which improved her MAC-best time in the event. The Lohja, Finland, native has led the conference in the event for more than two weeks and her time of 1:51.79 in the 200 freestyle on Saturday vaulted her to the top of the MAC in that event.
Marshall (5-7, 0-6 MAC) was unable to pick up a victory at its tri-meet at Toledo with Buffalo, but Kuurto provided enough fireworks to keep the meet competitive. She picked up her third first-place victory of the afternoon in the 50 freestyle (24.28), the fourth time this season that she won three individual events in one meet.
The Thundering Herd return to the water on Saturday at Bowling Green with Akron in a tri-meet to end the regular season. Marshall will later take to the pool at the MAC championships from Feb. 27-March 1, also at BGSU?s Cooper Pool.
