3/1/2003
Bowling Green, Ohio-Freshman Milla Kuurto swam to a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.74 to pace Marshall in the second day of the Mid-American Conference championships. The performance boosted the Thundering Herd?s two-day total; however, the first-year team remains in ninth place after two days at the championships.
?I am extremely pleased in the way our team has responded with some of the best times of the year,? head coach Leonard Krauss said. ?We look forward to having an outstanding third and final day at the championships.?
Although Kuurto was the only Thundering Herd swimmer to reach the finals in the second day of competition, the rest of squad responded with some of their best times of the year. Freshmen Elyse Beard and Emily Moe both had season bests in the 400-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively, and just missed out in qualifying for the finals, as both placed 18th in their events. Beard swam a 4:43.71 in the 400-yard IM while Moe posted a time of 1:07.97 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Marshall relay squads also responded with their best times of the year during the second day of competition. The team of Liisa Raty, Moe, Kuurto and Michele Kniceley swam a season best of 1:50.70 in the 200-yard medley relay, good for seventh place, while the team of Kuurto, Erika Nilsson, Knicely and Raty swam the 800-yard freestyle relay in a time of 7:44.36 to finish eighth.
Casey Mullholland, the only Marshall diver in the three-meter competition, finished with a score 340.05 to finish 16th in the event.
In other action during the second day of the meet, Knicely improved on her season best in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.72, good for 34th place in the event.
Marshall will conclude action at the three-day event beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1.
