Softball Falls in Opener of Winthrop Invitational
3/14/2003
Rock Hill, S.Car-North Carolina A&T State University jumped on the board early with a three- run home run from Lucinda Bost in the bottom of the first inning to give the Aggies a lead they would not relinquish in the first game of the Winthrop Invitational. A Marshall rally in the top of the seventh fell short after they left the bases loaded in the last inning and fell to the Aggies 5-2.
"I was disappointed in the way we came out to play after we had such a good showing last weekend," head coach Shonda Sranton said. "Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call for the rest of our games at the tournament.
After the three-run home run in the first, the Aggies extended their lead to 5-0 with two runs in the third. Lorraine Geiger led off the inning with a line drive that cleared the left-field wall to make the score 4-0. With runners on second and third, Sibol Loftin singled to left field to score Bost for the five run lead.
The Thundering Herd were held scoreless until the sixth inning when Allison Webb singled to score Amanda Williams.
After holding the Aggies scoreless in the sixth, the Thundering Herd did their best to mount a rally in the last inning. Courtney Kacenga scored after Sierra Davenport reached on the error to cut the Aggie lead to 5-2 with only one out. However, the Aggies managed to get out of the bases loaded jam when Williams popped out to the third baseman and De'Shaun Drake grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
Sarah Chamberlin pitched two inning, allowing five runs on five hits, in taking the loss for the Thundering Herd.
Latronda Anderson pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on eight hits, in the victory for the Aggies.
Jessica Williams led the Thundering Herd attack, going two for four on the day.
Bost was key in the victory for the Aggies, going two for two with two runs and three RBI's.
Marshall will return to action at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon when they face Monmouth University in the second game of the tournament.
