3/16/2003
Rock Hill, S.Car.? After two days of waiting for the weather to clear and field conditions to improve, the Marshall University softball team finally took the field and responded with their largest margin of victory this year with a 13-0 triumph over Winthrop University. With the win, the Thundering Herd move to 17-6 on the year while Winthrop falls to 12-16 on the season.
After a scoreless first inning, Marshall grabbed an early 1-0 lead when De?Shaun Drake scored with two outs after Winthrop third baseman Lindsay Merriman allowed Karri Britt to reach first by throwing the ball away.
The Thundering Herd added to their lead by scoring four runs in the fourth inning. Noelle Adams scored on a sacrifice fly from Sarah Wilson to make the score 2-0. Then, Courtney Kacenga added to the lead when her single scored Marshall?s Leigh Wintter. Marshall tallied their third and fourth runs of the inning when Britt and Kacenga scored on a throwing error by Winthrop?s Katie Kipisz to give the Thundering Herd a 5-0 lead.
After single runs in the fifth and sixth inning, the Thundering Herd exploded for six runs in the seventh to cap off the 13-0 shutout. The big hit in the inning came with two out as Drake blasted a three-run homer over the centerfield wall.
Winthrop never threatened during the game as Marshall pitcher Randi Nielson blanked the Eagles, allowing only four hits while moving her record to 10-2 on the year.
