Women's Soccer Closes Out Spring Schedule With Three Wins

4/14/2003

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall University?s women?s soccer team closed out its 2003 spring exhibition season with three wins over the weekend. The Herd recorded victories over Davidson College, the Ohio Internationals and the Dayton Galaxies.

?Three victories was a good way to end the spring season,? head coach Chris Kane said. ?Our opponents exposed some weaknesses but we were able to work through them and find a way to win. Overall I was very excited and pleased with our effort and our work ethic.?

A first period goal by Danielle Lowther lifted the Herd past Davidson in the first contest of the Mountain State Invitational in Bluefield, W.Va. on Saturday. MU went on to take a 3-1 victory in game two over the Ohio Internationals. The Herd jumped out to the early lead on a goal by Jaime Gruber and two by Lindsay Stelter and never looked back.

Coach Kane brought his team home to Sam Hood Field to take on the Dayton Galaxies on Sunday. The Herd made easy work of the under-18 squad, cruising to a 5-1 victory. Stelter and Gruber each added to their total in the Herd?s final scrimmage of the spring season. Jen Short, Ellerie Karl and Sarah Gupton also added a goal a piece to help lead the Herd to its third victory in two days. Marshall had its work cut out with only a single substitute. Senior Stacy Wells and junior Sarah Barber also had strong outings for the Herd.

Marshall will hold its annual alumni game Saturday, April 26th at 1:00 p.m. on Sam Hood Field. First year head coach, Kane looks to begin a new era in Marshall women?s soccer this fall with an exhibition contest in Morgantown, W.Va. against the Mountaineers of West Virginia University on August 23rd.
