HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University softball team is gearing up for an important weekend of Mid-American Conference play. The Herd will travel to the University of Toledo for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 10th and from there will head to Kent State University to take on the Golden Flashes in a three game series with the MAC East?s number two squad.
Marshall, now 28-10 overall, currently occupies first place in the MAC East with a 9-2 conference record. The Herd leads the MAC in team batting average, hitting .314 in conference contests this season. Senior De?Shaun Drake is second only to Ball State?s Katie Shea, batting an impressive .500 in MAC games. Sierra Davenport has swiped eight bases in eight MAC contest to lead that category. Randi Nielson is holding opponents to a lower average than any other pitcher in the conference (.154). Nielson is a perfect 6-0 on the mound in MAC play.
The University of Toledo (5-17) is 6th in the MAC?s West Division with a 2-8 conference mark. The Rockets pair of MAC victories have come in the form of an 8-5 win over the University of Akron and a 3-2 victory over Western Michigan University. Freshman Gina Muratori is hitting .435 in conference play and sports an on base pct. of nearly .600.
Kent State is currently in second place in the MAC East with a 16-8 overall record and is 8-2 in conference play. The Golden Flashes fell at the hands of the Broncos of Western Michigan University, 1-0 and the Eagles of Eastern Michigan University, 9-7. Rachel Testa leads the Flashes at the plate hitting .338 on the season. Kate Leary and Melissa Rhodes have taken the mound for 13 of Kent?s wins. Leary has collected eight wins and Rhodes is sporting a .83 ERA.
The Herd?s contest against Toledo was postponed until the 10th due to weather. MU will take on the Rockets at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday in Toledo, Ohio. From there Marshall will travel to Kent, Ohio and face off against the Flashes at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday the 12th and the same time on Sunday.
