Herd Tennis Keeps Climbing Charts

Princeton, N.J. - Marshall University?s women?s tennis team has recorded its highest preseason ranking ever. The Thundering Herd is ranked 69th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings, released today.

Marshall received 161 votes in the poll that is voted on by coaches.

Marshall?s Jessica Johnson (Senior, Sewickly, Pa.) was also ranked by the National ITA Ranking Committee. With 226 votes, she ranks 63rd in the nation in singles, breaking her own record of 82nd (set in 2003) for the highest singles ranking in school history.

In addition to her singles ranking, Johnson and teammate Ashley Kroh (Junior, Louisville, Ky.) received 218 votes, ranking them 14th nationally.

?We are real excited about the team ranking. It?s the highest we have ever had,? Marshall head coach John Mercer said. ?We have high expectations, and hopefully we can go higher as the season progresses.?

The Thundering Herd opens the season on January 24th at the University of Kentucky.
