Marshall And West Virginia Men Meet In Toyota Capital Classic

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's basketball team entertains intrastate rival West Virginia Wednesday evening in the Toyota Capital Classic at the Charleston Civic Center. The Thundering Herd comes into the game with a 6-7 overall record, while the Mountaineers sit at 8-6 on the season.

West Virginia enters the Toyota Capital Classic having lost three out of their last four games, including their most recent contest at Providence on January 17th, 87-66. The Mountaineers are led by D?or Fischer, who averages 10.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

In Marshall's last time out, the Herd ended a three-game losing streak against Buffalo Saturday night in the Henderson Center with an 86-74 win. The Herd had four players in double-figures, and were led by Marvin Black, who came off the bench to score season highs in both points (22) and rebounds (12) in route to his Mid-American Conference leading fifth double-double. Junior guard A.W. Hamilton tied his career high with 17 points, while Barboursville, W.Va., native Mark Patton added 14 points, and freshman Tre Whitted chipped in 11 points.

WVU leads the all-time series, 23-8, including 12-2 against the Thundering Herd in neutral site meetings in Charleston. Marshall?s only two wins in Charleston came in an 81-79 overtime win in 2001-02 and a 91-87 victory in 1996-97. Both teams have met annually in the Charleston Civic Center since the 1991-92 season.
