- Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Miami (Ohio) sank a season-high 29 free throws on 35 attempts to guide the RedHawks past the Marshall women?s basketball team, 78-70, in a Mid-American Conference East Division battle at the Cam Henderson Center on Tuesday.
Miami?s Kim Lancaster got the starting nod for the first time this season and responded with her third straight 20-point game for a game-high 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting. Lancaster, last season?s MAC Sixth Man of the Year recipient, had seven rebounds and a pair of assists, blocks and steals to improve the RedHawks? record to 11-6, 5-1 in MAC play.
Marshall (11-7, 3-4 MAC) failed to halt Miami?s parade to the free-throw line en route to dropping its 13th straight game to the RedHawks. Sophomore Cindi Merrill and senior Melanie Kozlowski were both a perfect 8-of-8 from the line to score 10 and 16 points, respectively. Freshman Amanda Jackson dropped 17 points on the Herd, aided by seven free throws.
The tone of the game was set from the opening tip as Lancaster nailed a jumper in the lane while being fouled. The senior center converted for the traditional three-point play. Miami would jump ahead to a 7-0 lead before the Herd got on the board with a KaShawna Curry (Huntington, W.Va.) field goal at 16:56.
Marshall managed to tie the score six different times in the first half and even took a brief 15-14 lead at the 11:36 mark. Miami was able to keep Marshall at bay by closing the half on a 14-5 run with under five minutes remaining to enter the break up 13 points.
?We dug ourselves a hole in the first half,? Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said. ?They (Miami) were attacking the basket hard and we fouled them and bailed them out too much.?
The Herd, down 17 at one point in the second half, went on an 8-0 run to close to within four points of Miami at 68-64 with 2:26 remaining in regulation. Miami, though, would respond with a 9-0 run of its own to put the game out of reach.
?We had too many missed assignments that Miami turned into field goals,? Chadwick said. ?We have to start eliminating those assignment errors.?
Miami was flawless from the free-throw line (15-of-15) in the first half. For the first time this season, Marshall registered a higher field goal percentage (43.1) than its opponent on the way to a loss. Miami shot 41.8 percent from the field.
Marshall?s Modupe Ishola (Washington, D.C.) and Catie Knable (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) tied for the team-high in points with 10 apiece. Ishola was 5-of-6 from the floor. Curry paced the Herd with seven rebounds and freshman Teyonka Hodge (Washington, D.C.) recorded six assists.
Marshall has an extended break before its next game on Feb. 4 at Akron.
