CHARLOTTESVILLE, W.Va.- The Marshall University women?s tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to the University of Virginia, ranked 31st in the country, 4-3 in a five hour battle at the Boar?s Head Sports Club, Saturday.
To start the match, Marshall was able to take an early 1-0 lead by posting wins at the No.1 and No. 3 doubles positions. The No. 14 ranked team of senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly, Pa.) and junior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) defeated No. 38 Mariko Fritz-Krockow and Lauren Brunch 8-5. The Herd earned the doubles point when senior Meghan Skalsky (East Lansing, Mich.) and junior Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) teamed up to defeat Dora Bechliwanis and Caroline Hammond 8-4.
Marshall then extended their lead to 2-0 as No. 62 ranked Johnson downed No. 74 Mariko Fritz-Krockow at the No. 1 singles spot. The match posted two top 75 ranked players in the country. Virginia then rallied and took the next three matches. Marshall junior Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) then tied the match with a victory in the No. 6 doubles slot over Virginia?s Caroline Hammond, making the No. 4 match the deciding match. Ashley Kroh clinched the first set from Dora Bechliwanis 6-4; in the second set Bechliwanis was able hold off Kroh?s match point and win in a tie-breaker. Bechliwanis then took the third set and clinched the win for Virginia, moving their record to 3-1.
Marshall will travel to Louisville, Ky. to take on Southern Methodist University, February 14th and then the Herd will match up against the University of Louisville on the 15th.
