HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall softball team wrapped up fall competition on Tuesday after participating in seven intersquad games in six days.
Two freshmen particularly shined at the plate for the Herd. Sam Rodriguez (Oakley, Calif.) and Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) combined for 16 hits and 14 RBI. Folden batted a hefty .476 with four doubles.
2004 First-Team All-Mid American Conference performer Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) was also solid in the series posting a .417 batting average with two doubles, a triple and six runs. Fellow Georgia native, sophomore Ashley Mitchell (Kennesaw, Ga.) led both squads with seven stolen bases while batting .304.
Four pitchers took the mound for the Herd including senior Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.), sophomores Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore.) and Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio) and freshman Veronica Ralston (Tucson, Ariz.). Harter paced the contingent with a .91 ERA and in 23 innings pitched with 16 strikeouts, while only walking one. Nielson posted the best ERA (.88), scattering 16 hits in 24 innings of work.
?It is great to see our freshmen step it up and make an impact in the fall,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?Our pitching looked solid and I anticipate that all four will wreak havoc on opposing batters this season. I think its safe to say we are very excited for the spring.?
Marshall kicks off its season in Las Vegas, Nev. at the UNLV tournament on Feb. 4.
