10/1/2004
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced today that the Marshall University softball team was among the Academic Top Ten teams, based on cumulative team grade-point averages submitted by NFCA member head coaches for the 2003-04 academic year.
Marshall, who sported a 3.42 GPA, was ranked fifth in the country, tied with Southern Illinois. Eastern Michigan was the only other Mid-American Conference squad ranked in the top 25.
"I think this really says a lot about our players," head coach Shonda Stanton said. "We constantly emphasize the importance of balancing grades and on the field performance. I am very proud of our team for this recognition."
The 2004 fifth-place ranking comes after the squad was ranked seventh in the nation in 2003.
