Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame Inductions Friday

Six new members will join the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, October 22, in a dinner at the Marshall Memorial Student Center's Don Morris Room.

The following are members of the Marshall Hall Of Fame Class of 2004:

Bill Archer ? Wrestling, 1967-71. The ultra-successful wrestling coach of Huntington High School posted an outstanding dual meet win mark of 12-5-1 as a senior at MU and he placed third among Mid-Western independent colleges in the Mid-State Championships in 1971. Archer won a state championship at Huntington High School and has coached the wrestling program to over 400 wins in matches, producing 25 state champions, 24 state runner-ups, 114 state-placing wrestlers. Kristina Behnfeldt ? Women?s Basketball, 1995-99. She is the only MU player to ever score at least 2,000 points (2,117) and pull down 1,000 rebounds (1,101) in a career. Behnfeldt was a two-time GTE Academic All-American (3rd-1998; 1st-1999) and was first team All-Conference three of four years (Southern-1996 & 1997; MAC 1999, 2nd-1998) and won the Dr. Dorothy Hicks Marshall Female Athlete of the Year in 1998 and 1999 and won the Donna Lawson Leadership Award 1997-98-99. Bob Burgess ? Men?s Basketball 1959-62. He led the Herd is rebounding all three seasons, grabbing 356 (15.5 per game, fifth-best average at MU) boards in 1959-60; 321 in 1960-61; and 305 in 1961-62. The 356 rebounds is the sixth-best season in Marshall. Burgess also led the team in scoring in 1960-61 with a 14.5 per game average and led the team in free throw percentage in 1961-62 (70.1%). He is third all-time in rebounding at Marshall with 973 in his career. In 1962, the New York Knicks selected Burgess in the National Basketball Association?s 1962 draft. Scott Davis ? Men?s Golf, 1975-78. A first team All-Southern Conference selection in 1978, Davis helped Marshall to the second-best finish in school history in the 1976 NCAA Tournament, when the Herd posted a 17th place finish. At the NCAA Tournament in 1976, Davis was the winner of the NCAA ?Long Drive? Championship at the national tournament. As a junior, Davis won the MU Invitational, one of only three MU players to accomplish that and helped Marshall record its only win in the MUI (in 1977) in the 35-year history of the event. Linda Holmes ? Badminton and Volleyball, 1972-74; Coach & Administrator, 1976-84. As a player in 1972-73 (MU 17-10) and 1973-74 (9-15), Holmes helped Marshall volleyball on a late season run that including winning the first WV Women?s Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship for MU volleyball and advancing to the Herd?s second-ever Mid-West Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) Tournament. Holmes greatest contributions would come later as a coach of three sports and Holmes served as the senior women?s administrator and assistant athletic director in the MU athletic department from 1976-84. Roger Johnson ? Football, 1991-94. Marshall?s all-time leading tackler with 548 tackles in his career. He is tied for the lead in games played, appearing in 59 Marshall contests over four years, and started in 50 of those games. Johnson is 12th all-time in interceptions, pulling down nine picks. He was a two-time All-American, winning first team honors on the Walter Camp Association Team in 1993 and 1994, when he was also named first team All-Southern Conference, and was the SC Freshman of the Year in 1991. Brad Workman ? Baseball (1915-17) & Football (1914-16, 1919). Quarterback for the Marshall team for the famous ?Tower Play? against WVU, and later against Ohio University, in 1915. Scored 15 touchdowns to lead Marshall in scoring in 1916, including five TD in the 101-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan, biggest win in Marshall history. Help lead Marshall to 5-4 /1914; 1-7 /1915; 7-2-1/1916; and played on the first undefeated, untied team in school history as Herd posted 8-0 /1919. Outstanding outfielder for Marshall teams 14-6/1915, 17-12 /1916 and 5-3/1917. Football captain.
