BLACKSBURG, Va. ? Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech managed four goals in a 4-0 win over the Marshall women?s soccer team on Wednesday night.
Marshall (3-13-3, 0-11-1 MAC) ran into a hot-offensive squad in the form of the Hokies who out-shot the Herd, 19-5.
Virginia Tech (10-7-0, 4-5-0 ACC) got scores from Kristel Jacobson, Sarah Kammerer, Mary Elizabeth Newton and Lindsay Alexander. Jacobson?s goal came from an assist from Nina Figueroa just over a minute into the game. Kammerer connected on a Newton assist in the 24th minute while the final two goals were achieved within the last five minutes and 30 seconds of the contest. The Hokies next challenge lies in its play-in game for a bid the ACC Tournament.
"I asked the girls before we went on the field to go out and compete," head coach Chris Kane said. "And that is exactly what they did...we played hard and the score was not indicative of how we played. We set up some momentum tonight to roll on this spring and next fall...we are going to be a great program. Virginia Tech is a great team and I think we looked at them as a team we aspire to be."
The loss ends the Herd?s season and the collegiate careers of its three seniors?Ellerie Karl (Oakwood, Ohio), Jessica Crawford (Amelia, Ohio) and Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, N.Y.).
?These three players have meant a great deal to our program and they will be sincerely missed,? Kane said. ?I wish we could have finished with some wins towards the end for them.?
Woods, who leaves Marshall as its most prolific goal keeper, picked up three saves in the loss.
This was the final season in the Mid-American Conference for the Herd as it travels to Conference USA in 2005.
