Ohio Next Challenge for Women's Soccer
10/7/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall women?s soccer team will be in search for a trio of firsts when it takes on the Ohio Bobcats at Sam Hood Field on Friday night in Mid-American Conference play.
If Marshall (3-7-3, 0-6-1 MAC) can drop the Bobcats on Friday, it would be the first win in program history versus the Athens-based school, the first MAC victory for second-year head coach Chris Kane at home, and will provide the Herd with win number one in conference play this season.
Ohio (6-4-2, 5-0-2 MAC) has surrendered only one goal this season in conference play. The stingy Bobcat defense has shut out opponents a consecutive 734 minutes en route to six straight wins. On the offensive side, OU is paced by Tiffany Horvath and Natalie Grein, who have five and four goals, respectively. Horvath netted two scores and Grein one in OU?s 3-1 win over the Herd a year ago in Athens.
Freshman Katie Watson (Woodbridge, Va.) continues to lead the youth-laden Marshall squad. The forward has 16 points this season while her six goals in 2004 are ranked sixth in the MAC this season.
The game against Ohio will be part of a doubleheader with the men?s team. The Marshall men?s soccer team will take on Akron at 5 p.m. before the women?s squad battles Ohio at 8 p.m.
The women's soccer team will be distributing 200 Thundering Herd Cheerstix prior to the game and selling Marshall Women's Soccer T-Shirts with all proceeds going toward the Beat Breast Cancer Walk on October 10th at Ritter Park. In addition, the women's soccer team will be giving away $50 each half of their game to the loudest group in attendance.
All games at Sam Hood Field are free to the public.
