White Downs Green in Intrasquad Scrimmage, 123-106

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team hosted its annual intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday Oct. 9. The white team defeated the green team 123-106.

Leading the way for the white team was senior Erika Nilsson (Haninge, Sweden) who had first place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.27) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.69).

On the green side the top finisher was junior Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland). Kuurto had top finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.91), the 100-yard freestyle (54.68) and was a member of the first place 400-yard medley relay team (4:07.57).

"Our returners had a good day today," said Marshall University Head Coach Leonard Kraus, "they will definitely be a big presences this year."

Freshman Ashley McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn.) captured the top spot in the 1000-yard freestyle for the green team with a time of 10:38.57. The white team's Lauren Ford (Fr., St. Albans, W.Va.) placed first in the 200-yard IM (2:14.19).

"It was good to see our freshman step up today and to know that they can do that in a meet situation," said Kraus, "Lauren Ford and Ashley McIlvain had huge days today. They stepped up big."

In diving white team member Casey Mulholland (Jr., Stone Mountain, Ga.) placed first in both the 1-meter (226.90) and the 3-meter (238.25). Freshman Gina Sylvester (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished just behind white teammate Mulholland in both events with scores of 226.7 in the 1-meter and 185.25 in the 3-meter.

"Our three divers did well today," said Kraus, "it's going to make a big impact through the year having three divers. Overall definitely and A performance today, it sets us up well for Youngstown and Radford."

The Marshall University swimming and diving team opens up the regular season on Sunday Oct. 17 at 1:00 p.m. in a tri-meet against Youngstown State and Radford.
