Herd Finishes Second at Doug Coers Invitational

11/20/2004

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Marshall University women's swimming and diving team finished in second place just behind host Ball State at the Doug Coers Invitational. Following the Herd was University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in third, Valparaiso University in fourth, Baldwin-Wallace took the fifth spot and Butler rounded out the meet in sixth.

In the second and third sessions the distance crew took care of business again with Erika Nilsson (Haninge, Sweden), Danielle Chapelle (London, Ontario) and Ashley McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn.) finishing first (17:12.92), second (17:42.32) and third (17:55.17) in the 1650-yard freestyle, respectively.

"Going one, two, three in the mile was a good feeling," said Marshall University Head Coach Leonard Kraus. "Our distance swimmers performed very well this weekend."

Junior Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) had top finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (56.76), the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.07) and was a member of the first place 800-yard freestyle relay team (Nilsson, Renee Lambert, McIlvain) with a time of 7:44.76.

Freshman Lambert (Maryville, Tenn.) also had the victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.94.

"I thought we had three or four good races today," said Kraus. "It was a tough format to get those races in three sessions."

In diving junior Casey Mulholland (Stone Mountain, Ga.) had win on the 3-meter boards with a score of 455.60 in 10 dives.

"This type of meet gives us a look at how the Miami Invitational and the Mid-Amercan Conference Championships will be," Kraus said. "Hopefully the freshman will have learned what to expect heading into those meets."

The Herd will next travel to Oxford, Ohio for the Miami Invitational. The meet will run December 3-5.
