Women's Basketball Hosts Exhibition with West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Sunday marks the Marshall women?s basketball team?s preseason debut as exhibition action comes to the Cam Henderson Center at 2 p.m. with the Thundering Herd set to tackle the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan.
Head coach Royce Chadwick is entering his fourth season at Marshall and is coming off his most successful season to date with the Green & White. Chadwick returns 10 letterwinners, including three starters, from a team that went 18-12 last season with an unprecedented run to the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals.
Preseason All-MAC East Division selection Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (Houston, Texas) leads the Herd into its final season of competition in the MAC before MU joins Conference USA in 2005-06. Shepard-Hall, a junior guard, led Marshall with 11.8 points per game in her sophomore campaign to garner honorable mention All-MAC accolades.
Other starters returning to the Herd include sophomores Teyonka Hodge (Washington, D.C.) and KaShawna Curry (Huntington, W.Va.). Hodge led all MAC freshmen and placed ninth overall in assists (3.5/game) and assist/turnover ratio (1.16) last season, while Curry started the first 10 games of her career and came on strong in the Herd?s league tournament run.
West Virginia Wesleyan, out of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is led by second-year coach Steve Tierney. The Bobcats went 13-14 in 2003-04 with an 8-10 record in WVIAC play. Senior Frances Carvajal mans the center position and may be considered the league?s top post player. Carvajal is joined by All-WVIAC Rookie Team selection Sarah Grab, a guard out of Erie, Pa.
Tickets for Sunday?s preseason opener are $5 for adults and $3 for children.
