HUNTINGTON, W.Va.?The Marshall softball team will embark on its toughest schedule in program history in 2005 as it battles an opponent from every major conference as well as challenging for a Mid-American Conference championship for the last time before the Herd moves to Conference USA in 2006.
The Herd will head to UNLV, Auburn, Arizona, East Carolina and Ohio State for preseason tournaments while also playing doubleheaders against Tennessee, Kentucky, and Louisville before the beginning of conference competition. Marshall will also host the Ramada Spring Classic on March 11-13 as it will welcomes UNC-Greensboro, Canisius, and Morehead State to Dot Hicks Field. The Herd challenges non-conference foe Eastern Kentucky on March 29 at home.
?It is obviously a difficult schedule but our philosophy is that we have the confidence this season to strengthen our RPI,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?We have a powerhouse from just about every conference and we are going to be challenged in every tournament. There is no off weekend and this schedule is going to be a great measuring stick as we try to get to that next level.?
Marshall, which went 31-27 (12-12 MAC) a year ago, returns 13 letterwinners, including 2004 First Team All-MAC honorees Amanda and Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.). The Herd?s lone senior is 2003 MAC Pitcher of the Year Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.).
MU will open up MAC play at home versus Buffalo on March 25.
