Thundering Herd Continue Road Trip With Matchup Against Zips

2/1/2004

AKRON, Ohio - The Marshall men's basketball team plays an important Mid-American Conference East Division game Monday night when they take on the Akron Zips. The Herd post a 7-10 overall record, 4-5 in the conference, while Akron enters Monday's game with a 9-8 record, 3-6 in the MAC.

The Herd is coming off an 88-73 loss at the hands of Bowling Green Saturday afternoon. Marshall has lost six out of their last eight, including their last three league games away from the Henderson Center.

The Zips boast the conference?s leading scorer in Derrick Tarver, who averages 23.4 points per game. Tarver attempts 29% of Akron?s shots, and accounts for 32% of their total offense. Akron has lost five out of their last seven, and like the Thundering Herd, needs a win tonight to keep pace in the MAC race.

Marshall leads the all-time series between the two schools, 10-6. Akron won last year?s meeting at the J.A.R., 79-71, to even the all-time record on the Zips? home court to 2-2. In 2001-02, MU?s Ronald Blackshear guided Marshall to a 104-87 win, their last win at the J.A.R., behind 14 made three-pointers, 11 of which he made in a row to start the game.

The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
