MU Women Prep for Bout with MAC-Leading RedHawks
2/10/2004
The Marshall women?s basketball team will begin an arduous three-game road trip beginning with Wednesday?s matchup with the Mid-American Conference-leading Miami (Ohio) RedHawks at Millett Hall. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Marshall (12-8, 4-5 MAC) embarks on its final run through the league?s East Division with the 14-6 (8-1 in the MAC) RedHawks who have won six straight games, including a 78-70 win in Huntington, W.Va., over the Thundering Herd on Jan. 27. The game marks the first of three straight road games for Marshall, continuing at Toledo on Saturday and winding up with Kent State on Monday.
Miami owns a 14-2 lifetime edge over Marshall and has won 13 straight in the series. Both of Marshall?s wins, however, have come on the RedHawks? home floor. The last time the Herd defeated Miami was on Feb. 21, 1998, the second time the two school?s ever met as conference counterparts.
Miami is arguably the hottest team in the MAC, standing a half game ahead of West Division leaders and defending league champs Western Michigan. The MAC team scoring leaders feature two players in the top-10 in points per game in seniors Colleen Day and Kim Lancaster (14.2 and 13.4 ppg, respectively, 4th and 9th in MAC). Lancaster scored a season-high 25 points on Marshall two weeks ago in her first start of the season. The center has started every game since and has led the ?Hawks to a 4-0 record in that span.
Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick will get his second crack at setting a Herd MAC-era record 13th win of the season. In 2002-03, Chadwick?s squad posted a 12-win campaign, including a school-record seven MAC victories.
Senior Catie Knable (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) continues to pace Marshall in both scoring (10.1 ppg, 30th in MAC) and rebounding (9.7 rpg, 2nd in MAC). She is just nine points shy of 800 for her career.
Wednesday?s rematch can be heard live on 88.1 WMUL-FM, Marshall?s student-run radio station, or on the internet at www.marshall.edu/wmul.
