RALEIGH, N.C. ? Three Elon University home runs doomed the Marshall University softball team Saturday morning as they lost the first game in gold bracket play of the Triangle Classic, 4-0.

The fourth inning brought problems for the Herd defense and starting pitcher Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio). After holding the Fighting Phoenix scoreless through three innings, an error put one on for third baseman Christina Melton, who in turn sent a two-run home run over a leaping Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) to push Elon ahead 2-0. Luers loaded the bases with two outs before Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) entered the game for her first action of the tournament. After walking her first batter, she forced an infield grounder to get out of the inning.

Trouble followed Marshall into the fifth inning as well. Two solo home runs presented an insurmountable 4-0 lead for Elon as the Fighting Phoenix rode out the game only giving up one more hit.

The Herd evened its record to 4-4 while Elon moves to 2-1 on the year.

Wilson had half MU?s offensive output in the contest, knocking out two hits. Chamberlain struck out five in her three innings of work.

MU got the chance to take on its second Big Ten opponent of the young season when the Herd matched up with the Boilermakers of Purdue for rights to Sunday's championship portion.

The game was tied 1-1 in the first inning when rain cancelled play for Saturday and predicted inclement weather for Sunday led tournament officials to call off all games on Sunday as well.

The Herd will have the next week off before traveling to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Frost Classic Feb. 27.
