LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marshall University women?s tennis team clinched their first win of the young season with a 5-2 victory over Southern Methodist University, at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, Saturday.
?We are excited with the win,? said Head Coach John Mercer. ?We are still polishing up certain areas, and with every experience we are enhancing the level of our game? the level we know that we are capable of.?
Marshall (1-2) opened the match by capturing the doubles point. Senior Meghan Skalsky (East Lansing, Mich.) and Junior Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) got the Herd on the board with an 8-4 victory in the number three doubles slot, defeating SMU?s Nadia Vaughan and Lynsie Jones. The No. 14 pairing of Senior Jessica Johnson (Sewicly, Pa.) and Louisville native, junior Ashley Kroh then clinched the doubles point for the Herd with a win in the number one doubles slot, defeating the pairing of Svetlana Kouzmenko and Kit Carson 8-6.
After securing the doubles point, Kroh extended the Herd?s lead to 2-0 with a two set victory (6-0, 6-2) in the number four singles slot over Vaughan. SMU?s No. 2 slot holder then edged by Senior Alice Sukner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to cut the score to 2-1. The Mustangs could only muster one more singles victory, before Marshall surged ahead with singles victories in the No. 4 and 5 slots, with the deciding match in the No. 5 slot, where junior,Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) defeated Halley Rambally 7-6 and 6-0.
Marshall will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they take on host University of Louisville (8-3) who was defeated by Southern Methodist University 4-3.
