STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Marshall University women?s tennis team clinched their third straight win of the season with an impressive performance, including wining five of six singles contest in route to 6-1 victory over Penn State University at the Penn State Tennis Center, Friday.

?It is great to pick up this win against a Big Ten Conference team,? head coach John Mercer said. ?Penn State is also a team that is in our region and this helps to make our team even stronger.?

The Thundering Herd opened the match by capturing the doubles point with victories at the number one and two doubles positions. This is the fourth straight time the Herd has won the doubles point. Marshall?s number one singles position and No. 14 ranked team of Senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly, Pa.) and junior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) defeated Leigh Ann Merryman and Megan Marton 8-5 while the number two tandem of senior Alice Sukner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) knocked off Maaria Husain and Sarah Spence 8-3.

After securing the doubles point, the Herd dominated the singles points, winning five of six. Marshall managed victories in the number one, two, three, four, and five positions, all in straight sets. No. 62 Johnson defeated Merryman in the number one position (6-4, 6-3) and Sukner defeated Marton in the second position while Marshall?s Nzudie, Kroh, and junior Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) also recorded straight set victories.

The victory extends the Thundering Herd?s winning streak to three and moves their record on the year to 3-2, including a win over Southern Methodist University 4-3 who upset No. 44 LSU.

The Herd will continue action Saturday the 21, when they face Princeton University. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. at the Penn State Tennis Center.
