Bethune-Cookman Drops Herd Softball in Extra Innings

- Box Score
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The temperature got cooler and so did the Herd bats as the Marshall University softball team lost in extra innings to Bethune-Cookman College, 3-1, under the lights at the Triple Crown Classic on Saturday night.
BCC (2-8) put the first run on the board when Amber Jackson, who led the country in 2003 in batting average, took a pitch from MU starting pitcher Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) over the fence in left centerfield to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
Marshall (2-2) tied the score when Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) sparked the Herd bats with a solid double to leftfield and then reached home after a Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) triple in the bottom of the third.
Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Oreg.) entered the game in relief for the second time in the tournament and came up with three big outs in the top of the sixth while MU experienced deja vu of the day?s earlier game against Central Florida, entering the bottom of the sixth inning with an even score of 1-1.
Despite several solid contacts in the next two frames, this time Marshall could not get anything brewing on the offensive front and the game entered extra innings still tied at 1-1.
The eighth inning brought an automatic twist to the game when the international tiebreaker was called into effect, placing a runner at second base for both squads prior to the first pitch in every inning past seven.
The rule benefitted the Wildcats immediately when BCC?s Jamie Tanksley advanced to third and then home following a wild pitch breaking a four-inning dry spell in which both teams were held scoreless.
Jackson followed up with a triple just over the glove of centerfielder Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) that drove home Shattera Davis securing the win for the Wildcats.
J. Williams led the Herd attack with two hits and a RBI.
Marshall?s fate in Sunday?s championship bracket is yet to be determined due to the ongoing play as of 9 p.m. Saturday.
