Kuurto Swims Against Nation's Best

3/19/2004

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Marshall sophomore swimmer Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) placed 29th (out of 45) in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.36) on Friday at the NCAA Championships.

Kuurto started out strong, taking a half of a second off her start time. She was holding onto second place in her heat at the 25-yard and 50-yard marks, but was unable to make up time toward the end. Competing in Kuurto's heat were four of the top ten butterfly swimmers in the nation.

"Today was a good learning experience for Milla," said Marshall University Head Coach Leonard Kraus, "I'm happy with her performance. She didn't back down, and held her own against some of the best swimmers in the nation."

Kuurto will compete in the 200-yard butterfly on Saturday.
