BLACKSBURG, Va. -- On the first day of the Hokie Classic at Virginia Tech, the Marshall University softball team swept East Tennessee State, 2-0, and Mount St. Mary's, 8-0, in Blacksburg, Va., on Friday.
Marshall 2, East Tennessee State 0
Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) connected on her third home run of the season in the top of the seventh to lift MU over East Tennessee State, 2-0, in the opening game of the Hokie Fastpitch Classic at Virginia Tech on Friday morning.
Wilson?s home run is the second such in seven days after the senior laced a round-tripper in the seventh inning of the Herd?s 10-9 loss to Central Florida last weekend at the Winthrop/Ringor Invitational.
Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Oreg.) reached first after singling to center field and her pinch-runner, Noelle Adams (Wheeling, W.Va.) stole a base and conquered third after a throwing error by a Buc outfielder. Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, Nev.) then provided the RBI single to bring in Adams and add padding to the Herd lead, 2-0.
Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) followed up by retiring the ETSU side in the bottom of the seventh and picked up her eighth and ninth strikeouts of the game to secure the win.
Spenia led all Herd hitters with two while Nielson scattered four hits for her eighth win of 2004.
Marshall 8, Mount St. Mary's 0
Reigning Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) struck out eight and gave up two hits in an 8-0 shutout of Mount St. Mary's on Friday afternoon.
Marshall (16-13 overall) belted out eleven hits on the contest, including a Spenia home run in the second inning.
Wilson boosted her hit mount with a two RBI double to right field in the fifth inning.
Allison Webb (Wayne, W.Va.) and Jennifer Susman (Lewisburg, W.Va.) both went 2-for-4 in the game while Susman also tallied a pair of RBI.
With the win on the mound, Chamberlain moves to 3-0 on the year.
The Herd is now set to take on Virginia Tech and St. Francis (Pa.) in day two of Hokie Classic Action. MU will battle Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. and St. Francis (Pa.) at 3 p.m.
