BLACKSBURG, Va. ? After dropping a close 3-2 loss to host-school Virginia Tech in game one on Saturday, the Herd rallied to beat St. Francis (Pa.), 8-7, in Hokie Classic action at Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech 3, Marshall 2

Callie Rhodes? two-out single to right field scored Caitlin Murphy in the bottom of the fourth inning to lift Virginia Tech to a 3-2 win over Marshall University in the Thundering Herd?s third game at the Hokie Classic on Saturday at Tech Softball Park.

Virginia Tech?s Katie Maynard pitched a complete game with seven hits and eight strikeouts to improve her record to 9-5. The Hokies (22-8) tallied only four hits to Marshall?s seven hits, but the Herd left eight players on base to VT?s six.

Virginia Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Marshall head coach Shonda Stanton was ejected in the frame after an argument with home plate umpire Randy Hearn, who declared that VT second baseman Shanel Garofalo was hit by a Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) pitch.

Nielson walked the first two batters of the inning and allowed a Rachel Pacheco single to center field that scored Kelly Brown and a Murphy groundout that plated Sarah Prosise.

MU came back in the second after Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch. The Herd tied the contest up in the top of the fourth when Wilson hit her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, to left field before Murphy?s game-winning RBI in the bottom of the frame.

Marshall?s Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) went 2-for-3 with a walk. Nielson falls to 8-6 on the season.

Marshall 8, St. Francis (Pa.) 7

The Herd and the Red Storm matched hits at eleven but MU pulled out the win over Northeast Conference opponent St. Francis, Pa., 8-7, on Saturday afternoon.

Marshall (17-14 overall) started the game with a run early as the Herd punched in one in the bottom of the first as Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) scored the first score of the game to edge the Herd 1-0.

Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) drove in J. Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) with a triple for an additional run in the third inning, but St. Francis would fight back in the fourth.

St. Francis picked up five runs to take the lead before MU was able to strike back in the same frame off a Jennifer Susman (Lewisburg, W.Va.) sacrifice fly that scored Wilson to push the score to 5-2 in favor of the Red Storm.

Courtney Kacegna (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) knocked out her first home run of the season in the fifth inning and Allison Webb followed with a long ball of her own to drive in three as MU enlightened the score to 8-5 heading into the sixth.

The Red Storm was able to manage a pair of runs in the top of the seventh but fell short as MU picked up its third win of the tournament.

Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) got her second win of the Hokie Classic and fourth overall with two strikeouts and two runs.

J. Williams, Davenport and A. Williams were the multiple-hit batters for the Herd with two apiece.

Marshall will conclude its Blacksburg venue with a game against Appalachian State at noon on Sunday.
