Kuurto Gains Valuable Experience at NCAA Championships

3/20/2004

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Marshall University sophomore Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) placed 35th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.84) on Saturday at the NCAA Championships.

"Unfortunately she wasn't quite as sharp as we were hoping today," said Marshall University Head Coach Leonard Kraus, "however, it was a great learning experience. It let her know what it takes and what is like to be at this kind of meet."

Kuurto had a record breaking season for the Herd, setting several new school records as well as a new Mid-American Conference record in the 100-yard butterfly. Kuurto was recognized for her accomplishments by being named MAC Swimmer of the Year. In addition to being honored for her achievements in the pool, she was also honored for her achivements in the classroom by being named to the Academic All-MAC team.

"I'm very proud of everything she's done this year," said Kraus, "I think her future is very bright and her chances of becoming an All-American in the next two years are amazing."
