HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? 2003 Mid-American Conference Tournament champion Western Michigan will make a visit to Dot Hicks Field this weekend as the Marshall University softball team jumps into its run for a second consecutive regular season title with a doubleheader against the Broncos at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Marshall (18-14) has seen recent success, putting up big offensive numbers in its 4-1 Hokie Classic appearance. In the Herd?s four wins at Virginia Tech last weekend, MU defeated both Mount St. Mary?s and Appalachian State by eight runs apiece, posted a win over East Tennessee State, 2-0 and edged St. Francis (Pa.), 8-7.
Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.), last week?s MAC East Player of the Week, is putting up the best numbers of her career. The senior outfielder is currently batting .384 with 33 hits. On the mound, MU has been utilizing a solid four-player rotation in the form of Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio), Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.), Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Oreg.) and Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.). The Herd?s pitching staff boasts a 2.10 ERA.
For Western Michigan (10-13), it has been Jaymie Voss that has manufactured much of the Bronco offensive output this season. Voss has amassed twenty hits in 2004 paired with a .313 batting average. WMU has four stolen bases and one home run compared to Marshall?s conference-leading 92 stolen bases and 19 round-trippers.
Marshall will be looking for its second win over the Broncos, as the all-time series stands at 8-1. A win would also avenge a 7-5 loss at Firestone Stadium in the MAC tournament a year ago.
The doubleheader Saturday will be broadcast by Marshall's award winning radio station, WMUL, via the internet and can be accessed by clicking on the above link. All games at Dot Hicks Field are free to the public.
