Herd Hits Road for First Away Conference Tilt

3/29/2004

Sierra Davenport leads the Mid-American Conference in hits (40).

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? After compiling two wins over Western Michigan last weekend at home, the Marshall University softball team takes its act on the road with a mid-week doubleheader at Bowling Green at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Marshall (20-14, 2-0 MAC) has a slew of players topping the Mid-American Conference statistical categories. Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.), Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) occupy the top three positions in total hits, Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) crests the RBI and home run category, and A.Williams and Davenport are one and two in stolen bases. Pitcher Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) has more wins than any other MAC hurler.

Bowling Green (12-14, 2-1 MAC) is fresh off a two-win performance over rival Toledo last weekend. The Falcons are led by Gina Rango, who attests for a .345 batting average and a BGSU-leading 29 hits and 18 RBIs. On the mound, it is Liz Vrabel that has allowed the least damage, posting a 1.31 ERA coupled with a 6-8 record. Vrabel is holding the offensive opponents to a .218 batting average.

Wednesday?s match-up will pin number one against number one, as Bowling Green?s conference-pacing pitching staff will be countered by Marshall?s league-leading .288 batting average. The all-time series sets in favor of the Falcons at 2-17.
